Wes paced back and forth on the sand, the heat of his situation more intense than the climate of The Dunes, causing sweat to bead along his temples. “It doesn’t make sense.” He glanced up at Zephaniah. “I mean, it worked, it actually worked.”

“What worked? Slow down, my friend. One thought at a time.”

“What you said before. There was a connection between the LV and here.”

Zephaniah frowned and stroked his beard. “What kind of connection? Tell me what you mean.”

“Emily … Logiverse Emily, I mean … digs aquatic life. Who knew?” He shook his head rapidly. “Anyway. She’s an Aquarius. I never kept up with Zodiac signs much, but when she told me that, everything just clicked.”

“You still aren’t making sense.”

Wes took a deep breath. “Aquarius was the name of this Emily’s world. In the Existence.”

Zephaniah arched an eyebrow.

“It worked. I went to her world, and it was this super crazy giant aquarium—actually, no. It was more like being under the sea. Really cool.”

“And how did she feel about that?”

“She wasn’t happy I’d found out.” He waved it off. “But anyway, something she said didn’t make any sense.”

“And what was that?”

“She said she didn’t go to the LV. And she said it was a really bad thing. What does that mean?”

Zephaniah looked thoughtful. He didn’t answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, it was in a detached manner. “I’m of the opinion that a little escape from the Existence is healthy now and then. Entering a place filled with logic keeps the mind alert.”

Wes nodded. “Most people don’t need convincing, right? So tell me this. Why would someone choose not to go?”

“Some have a problem separating truth from fantasy.”

“Why? One is ruled by logic, the other’s full of chaos.”

“It isn’t understanding that these individuals lack. It’s self-control.”

Wes frowned. “I don’t get it.”

“Your recollection barrier is broken. So when you’re in the Virtual Logicity, you’re not fully vested. You remember the Existence. The LV doesn’t feel real. Am I right?”

“Yeah.”

“But for the rest of us, that barrier is the one constant in the Existence. Our Virtual Logicities feel real when we’re there.”

“I get it. What’s your point?”

“Have you stopped to consider what it’s like coming back? For everyone else, I mean?”

Wes frowned, still not sure what the old man was getting at.

“When we return, we get a harsh wake-up call. It’s a bit traumatic to have all those intense memories and suddenly discover none of it was real.” He paused for a moment.

“Yet many keep going. The high they get from being there is worth the price of the low when they come back to reality.”

“Makes sense, I guess. Sounds fairly harmless.”

Zephaniah tilted his head. “Maybe. But for some, it’s worse than that. For some people, the Virtual Logicity has become an addiction. The urge to go back is so strong they can’t bear to be away from it. Some spend the majority of their lives there. It can become an obsession.”

“Sounds like you know first-hand?” Wes asked.

“No. But I have known some. To say they are unhappy is putting it mildly.
